, yes it is some work, especially if you have a lot of them-but there is currently no other way. I wrote a python script when I moved off from identi.ca to my own StatusNet instance, but that will not work with friendika as the friendika API doesn't understand identicas XMPP bot commands and the script needs this bloody trick the SN devels implemented.
So just add evan@evan.status,net (or who ever you want) at the contact page to your contacts. Now you can send them notices (StatusNet has no SPAM prevention mechanism so your postings will land in the @-reply tab) and as you are listening their streams their replys will land in the trhead.
Postings from SN users you don't follow will not reach your wall. friendika assumes (correctly IMO) that they are SPAM as you don't have a relationship to them.
Sort your contacts in groups. One can be in more then just one. That way you can read only those you want to read right now.
